Marcela Smutt, Coordinator of UNDP InfoSegura Regional Project, presented an analysis of regional trends in homicidal violence through 2022. According to the available data, there has been a decline in the homicide rate in Central America and the Dominican Republic since 2015. “Citizen security puts people at the center, and every life counts,” she remarked. In addition, she noted that the decline in homicides has been unequal, because the violent deaths of women have declined at a slower rate than those of men. Nevertheless, young people continue to be the primary victims of homicidal violence in the region. Also, weapons are present in 78.6% of homicides on record in the subregion.
Ana Marcela López., Multi Dimensional Data Analyst for UNDP InfoSegura stated that involuntary human mobility (displacement, emigration, returnees) is multicausal, and varies widely in the different territories. The analyst also pointed out that "violence is one of the main drivers of migration in El Salvador and Honduras.
