  • El Salvador showed a 69.0% decline in the number of homicides as in 2023 compared to 2022.
  • The average daily homicide rate was 0.4 in 2023, while it had been 1.4 in 2022.
  • The San Salvador Metropolitan Area accounted for 26% of homicides registered in 2023.
  • In the period from January to September 2023, 9.9% more people were reported missing compared to the same period in 2022.

Key data (2022)

  • In 2022, 18 homicides of women and 53 feminicides were reported, for a total of 71 violent deaths of women that year.
  • In 2022, the number of violent deaths of women fell by 62 compared to the previous year.
  • During 2022, one in three violent deaths of women involved young women from 15 to 34 years of age.
  • In 2022, reports of sexual violence fell 11.6% compared to 2021. Some 91.7% were women.
  • In all, 6,241 women were victims of physical violence in 2022, 12.0% lower than in 2021.
  • During 2022, 1,002 victims of intrafamily violence were registered, that is 45.4% more than in 2021. Nine in ten victims were women and girls.
